| Epigenomics' ethical values
We at Epigenomics believe that our technology may revolutionize the field of diagnostics and treatment of human diseases and lead to a personalized medicine that will be greatly beneficial in improving the health of individuals. We are, however, aware that our personalized approach might give rise to new bioethical issues and bear potential risks. We will meet these challenges with absolute respect for human dignity, freedom, human rights and the unique nature of all human beings. All employees at Epigenomics are deeply committed to prohibit any discrimination of human beings based on genetic or epigenetic characteristics. We guarantee confidentiality regarding all personal patient data. In all aspects we adhere to the Core Ethical Values published by EuropaBio, the European Association for BioIndustries and the Universal Declaration on the Human Genome and Human Rights (UNESCO, 1997). For any further questions regarding Epigenomics' ethics policy please do not hesitate to contact: ethics@epigenomics.com
Another useful source of information on ethical values can be found on the UNESCO-website (www.unesco.org, then search for "bioethics").
Epigenomics' stance on cloning, stem cells, and pre-natal diagnostics
Epigenomics would like to stress that it condemns reproductive cloning of human embryos, regardless of the underlying reasons. However, we approve of controlled research making use of surplus embryos, i.e. the production of new stem cell lines. More strongly, we favor research carried out on adult and umbilical stem cells. While it has become clear that epigenetic factors play a major role in the success or failure of reproductive cloning experiments, the company does not participate in any such experiments on human stem cells. Epigenomics embraces the official EU-statement on this matter. |
