Epigenomics AG (Frankfurt, Prime Standard: ECX), a molecular diagnostics company developing tests based on DNA methylation, announced today that data, evaluating the prognostic value of a specific biomarker incorporated in its breast cancer outcome prediction test, has been accepted for poster presentation by the American Association for Cancer Research (AACR) at its 2005 annual meeting in Anaheim, California, USA.
The abstract titled "Hypermethylation of PITX2 and Risk of Breast Cancer Recurrence in Hormone Receptor-Positive Lymph Node-Negative Breast Cancer" has been made available today via the AACR website (www.aacr.org). Epigenomics and investigators from Erasmus Medical Centre (The Netherlands) and Technical University Munich (Germany) will formally present the data at the AACR Annual Meeting on April 18, at 1:00 pm PDT.
Epigenomics has developed diagnostic assays incorporating PITX2 and other promising DNA methylation markers to identify those patients that would have an excellent clinical outcome following the treatment with Tamoxifen. The results, which will be presented at the upcoming AACR Annual Meeting, further validate PITX2 in an independent patient cohort. Since these breast cancer patients had never received any adjuvant systemic treatment, these data suggest that PITX2 is also strongly associated with the aggressiveness of breast cancer rather than only with therapeutic response. The study forms part of the research program Epigenomics is conducting in a partnership with Roche Diagnostics. Further results from this program will be presented at the upcoming American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) Annual Meeting in May, and separately published in a peer-reviewed journal.
Based on these findings and ongoing clinical studies, Epigenomics believes there is potential for significantly expanding the use of this tissue-based product beyond the scope of a treatment response prediction test to a breast cancer molecular classification test which would potentially show how aggressively the cancer is growing.
About Epigenomics
Epigenomics is a molecular diagnostics company with a focus on the development of novel products for cancer. By detecting and interpreting DNA methylation patterns, Epigenomics’ tests can potentially diagnose disease at an early stage and help guide physicians to select an appropriate therapy. Epigenomics collaborates with Roche Diagnostics on the development of several diagnostic products in cancer. The company has its headquarters in Berlin, Germany, and a wholly owned subsidiary in Seattle, USA. For more information, please visit our website at www.epigenomics.com.
