Since DNA is confined to a certain compartment in a cell - the nucleus - it is wrapped up into bundles called chromosomes. Each chromosome contains a few thousand genes, that is, subsequences of DNA. Stretched out in a straight line, the DNA is about 10,000 times longer than the chromosome.
