Imprinting
Genomic imprinting is an epigenetic marking process that causes some genes to be expressed according to whether they came from the mother or father. While most genes are expressed from both the maternal and the paternal alleles, some are only active on one chromosome but not on the other, depending on its origin (father/mother). Silent genes are methylated while the active version is usually found largely unmethylated.
